Responsibility for Maintenance: Student Engagement

Date of most recent changes: June 26, 2023

I. Policy Statement

The Community Care Hub assists students in reviewing potential housing that is available in the nearby community. Community Care Hub staff will assist students by helping them review online ads, provide guidance on what to look and look out for, and to discuss what it is like to live off campus (if appropriate). Any information provided with respect to the premises, services available and/or terms of lease must be furnished by the landlord. General information describing the rights and obligations of tenants and landlords as well as the extent of Onondaga Community College’s involvement with off-campus housing may also be provided.

Each student seeking information regarding off-campus housing shall be provided with the following statement in writing:

College employees do not inspect, approve or supervise the premises described, and the College does not become a party to private landlord-tenant or landlord-prospective tenant matters. Information regarding the premises has been provided by the landlord and the College makes no guarantee as to its veracity, nor does the College make any representation as to the safety or appropriateness of the premises, by inclusion of the premises on this list. You are encouraged to learn and understand all of your rights, responsibilities and protections afforded under the law before signing any rental agreement."

College employees shall not become involved in any transactions, disagreements, exchanges, payments, dictation of terms of leases or rental agreements, or communications between landlords and tenants or landlords and prospective tenants, other than as described above. Students or landlords having complaints against one another shall be directed to lodge them with the appropriate local or state agency and the College shall refrain from becoming involved.

II. Reason for Policy

This policy is intended to limit College involvement in off-campus landlord/tenant matters.

III. Applicability of the Policy

All Community Care Hub employees should be familiar with this policy. Any student seeking information regarding off-campus housing from the Community Care Hub should be made aware of the existence of this policy as described above
