How to Make the Most of Your Service Experience
Assess Your Personal Skills
Take time to identify the skills and strengths you can share with your site supervisor. Start by making a list that includes:
Prior work or service experience
Any job, internship, or volunteer role where you gained relevant experience.
Special skills or areas of expertise
Hobbies or talents you may be able to share, such as sports, technology, art, music, cooking, or other hands-on skills.
Personal qualities and characteristics
Consider traits like patience, flexibility, organization, a sense of humor, willingness to learn, or an interest in teaching and supporting others.
Make a Good Impression at Your Agency
- Greet staff, clients, and others you work with in a respectful and friendly manner. Follow the norms of the site, whether that is a handshake, nod, or smile.
- Be friendly while also respectful of personal boundaries. Some clients may need time to feel comfortable, so allow them to set the pace of interactions.
- Pay attention to the needs of others. Being a good listener is an important part of your service experience. Clarify information when needed to ensure understanding.
- Show initiative. Look for ways to help, and if you are unsure what to do, ask how you can assist.
- Remain calm and professional in unexpected situations. Clients, especially children, may express strong emotions or behaviors. If you are unsure how to respond, consult your site supervisor.
- Be consistent and reliable. Arrive on time, follow through on commitments, and be realistic about what you can promise.
- Maintain confidentiality. Do not share personal information about yourself, clients, or the agency. If you have questions about confidentiality, speak with your site supervisor, professor, or the Director of Civic Engagement.
- Share your skills and ideas. Talk with your site supervisor about ways your strengths and interests can support clients and the organization.
