April Jackson is a 42-year-old mother of three who is attending Onondaga Community College tuition-free thanks to the SUNY Reconnect program. She plans to earn two degrees here.

April Jackson attended Onondaga Community College three separate times, but each attempt was cut short by life’s challenges. Just when it seemed her opportunities had run out, a new door opened.

“I read about SUNY Reconnect on Syracuse.com and immediately went to the OCC website to see if the Health Information Technology degree was included. When I saw that it was, I knew it was time to come back.”

SUNY Reconnect is designed for adults ages 25 to 55 who have not yet earned a college degree. The program covers tuition, fees, books, and supplies after other financial aid is applied, removing a major barrier for many returning students.

Jackson enrolled through SUNY Reconnect in fall 2025. Since then, she has balanced part-time coursework with a full-time job as a medical billing specialist - all while being a devoted wife and mother. Her demanding schedule requires her to make the most of every available moment. “If I have an assignment due, I might stay up late working at home, use my lunch break at work, or head to campus early so I can finish before class.”

Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Jackson plans to earn two degrees from OCC: one in Health Information Technology and another in Health Care Administration. “It’s been a long time coming. It took so long to get back, I’m leaving here with two degrees!”

She hopes her story will inspire other adult learners to take advantage of SUNY Reconnect. “I’m very grateful. I was struggling with financial aid, and SUNY Reconnect removed that burden. I want anyone considering this to know they can do it too. You can achieve anything you set your mind to. Stick to your plan and don’t let anyone deter you.”
