What began in the basement of Paul Olszewski's Skaneateles home 30 years ago has grown into a multi-million-dollar engineering and land surveying firm whose work stretches across New York and beyond. That remarkable journey was recognized July 30, when M&P Engineering and Land Surveying, PLLC received the North Central Small Business Development Center's (SBDC) Veteran Entrepreneur of the Year Award during a ceremony at The Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles.
"Today, we celebrate not only an exceptional business leader, but also a veteran whose commitment to service did not end when he took off the uniform," said Sonya Smith, New York SBDC State Director. "Instead, Paul Olszewski transformed that same dedication, discipline, and leadership into building a business that continues to strengthen communities across New York and beyond."
Olszewski founded M&P in 1996 after retiring from the United States Air Force, where he served with the 174th Fighter Wing in Syracuse, and following more than two decades with the New York State Department of Transportation. A licensed land surveyor who grew up on Syracuse's North Side, he launched the company from his home's basement with a vision of building a business grounded in precision, integrity, and service.
Thirty years later, that vision has become reality. M&P now employs more than 30 people, has five partners, and provides engineering, land surveying, planning, and construction evaluation services for municipalities, public agencies, private clients, and major infrastructure partners.
As a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, the firm has played a role in projects involving highways, rail systems, public works, transportation infrastructure, and local community development. Whether completing a large government contract or surveying a residential property, the company has earned a reputation for professionalism, accuracy, and reliability. Olszewski and his firm's success story was highlighted in a segment on WSYR TV Newschannel 9.
The local SBDC chapter, the North Central Small Business Development Center, is hosted by Onondaga Community College in Syracuse and Jefferson Community College in Watertown, and is led by Regional Director Bob Griffin.
