Covid changed Jessica Plue's college plans but she has no complaints. Thanks to her hard work and positive attitude, she made the most of the situation and is more than happy with where she is today. "OCC was a great experience and very different with everything that went on. I enjoyed my time here so much and this was a great place for me. I was able to find my niche and feel really comfortable. Any struggles I ever had I was able to find different people to help me."
Plue graduated form Ithaca High School in 2018 and chose OCC so she could continue her softball career and earn a Nursing degree. She played one season of softball, but Covid claimed her second. She also wound up changing her degree path, switching from Nursing to Physical Education & Exercise Science.
When softball didn't happen she suddenly had more time on her hands. That's when she decided to become an RA in the residence halls. "I really enjoyed the experience. I liked being more involved in campus, putting on programs, and getting to know people who I wouldn't have ever met."
Earlier this month she was named a recipient of a Pinnacle Award which honors students who have demonstrated not only an exemplary academic performance, but a strong connection with the campus or community. "I was really honored. In everything I do I like to set a good example for people and be a leader. It's nice to know that what you're doing is being noticed."
Plue will receive her degree this Saturday, then transfer to a four-year school where she plans to resume her softball career while earning a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. In two years she will begin pursuing a master's in Athletic Training with the goal of working in collegiate or professional sports.
