Shew (pronounced SHAY) Way is completing her associate degree in Mechanical Technology this semester, marking the culmination of a journey that began halfway around the world, long before she set foot on the Onondaga Community College campus.
Way is a native of Thailand who immigrated to the United States with her parents when she was 6 years old. "When we first came to America, it was in the winter, and we experienced snow for the first time. I thought it was very cool. I remember waking up and looking out into the backyard and seeing a pile of white sparkly snow, and I was so surprised!"
She grew up in Syracuse, and in 2024 graduated from the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central. She had been taking classes at OCC since 2022 as part of the P-TECH program, and after finishing high school became a full-time college student. P-TECH stands for Pathways in Technology Early College High School. It provides high school students the opportunity to earn their diploma while working toward their associate degree simultaneously, preparing them for careers in high-demand fields.
During the fall 2025 semester, she interned at DL Manufacturing in North Syracuse, where she gained invaluable experience. "I worked in manufacturing and dabbled in programming and circuit work. They have a really great environment there. Everyone is super welcoming."
Her interest in mechanical technology has deep roots. "My dad is an engineer, and I am more of a visual learner. Hands-on work has always been better for me. I've always been interested in building things. In middle school, I did a VEX Robotics program that sparked my interest."
That interest led her to Syracuse ITC, and the P-TECH program. "It's such a great opportunity to get college experience while in high school, get connected to companies, and find opportunities for me. I really appreciate the P-TECH program. They've opened up a lot of doors for me."
Way plans to continue her education at Syracuse University where she will major in Science & Mechanical Engineering. From that first snowy day to the workshop floor, her journey reflects curiosity, determination, and a passion for building a bright future one machine, one class, and one opportunity at a time.
