Student Spotlight: Isaac Bennett

Onondaga Community College wasn't Isaac Bennett's first choice. Or his second. Or his third. Or his...

You get the idea.

But after two years on campus?

"Now I'm saying 'I really like it here. Do I have to leave now?!?'"

During his senior year at Jamesville-Dewitt High School, Bennett applied to more than a dozen schools. "I hoped one would give me a really good scholarship. I knew I couldn't afford most four-year colleges. None of those ended up working out. My last option was OCC."

Student Spotlight: Jasmine Martin

Jasmine Martin decided on a career and academic path very early in life while watching her younger brother grow up with significant medical issues. "I remember as far back as 1st grade wanting to do something with science. Over the years, staying overnight with my brother at Golisano Children's Hospital, I met the  entire staff there and learned how they got into their field. They told me I seemed incredibly interested, and they always needed more people to work there."

Speaker Brings Her Message to Women's History Month Event

Onondaga Community College's outstanding schedule of Women's History Month events included a conversation with Maria Alejandra Pozo titled, "Breaking Barriers: Women Leading Change Perspective in America."

Pozo was most recently a tax expert for the Internal Revenue Services of Ecuador. She designed projects and proposals aimed at enhancing tax transparency and fairness.

New York State's Top PTK Honor Society Chapter Welcomes New Members

Onondaga Community College's chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society celebrated another outstanding year and welcomed in new members during its spring induction ceremony. The event was held March 27 in Storer Auditorium.

OCC's chapter, which is named Alpha Sigma Zeta, recently received numerous New York State-level awards including:

Student Spotlight: Melissa Duran

Melissa Duran immigrated to the United States from Ecuador 11 years ago with the dream of becoming a surgeon. She settled in New York City with her sister where she worked full-time and went to school full-time. She earned Biology degrees from Laguardia Community College and Brooklyn College. Her grades were good, but not good enough for medical school. Her dreams of becoming a surgeon were on hold.
