OCC Student's Research to be Published

If you don't live in the world of research, you may not understand the magnitude of this story. Onondaga Community College student Elliott O'Connell will soon have the results of his summer research published in a peer-reviewed journal. Articles which appear in peer-reviewed journals first go through an evaluation process during which expert scholars critically assess the quality and scientific merit of the article and its research. Articles which survive the process are published in peer-review literature.

Alum Telling Stories With His Pictures

For as far back as Ben Cleeton '13 can remember, his parents encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. So it was no surprise when, as a 2nd grader at Geneseo Elementary, he brought his own art show to school one day. "I had found objects and sculptures and paintings. I did a lot with dragons and there were some masks too," he recalls. A story about his art show was featured in the local newspaper. Little did he or anyone know at the time, it was the beginning of him showing off his work to large audiences.

"Both institutions taught me valuable skills in the areas of listening, empathy, and trust. Those have stayed with me into the work I do today."

Alumna Making A Difference In The Community

When Jodi DeAugustine '89 graduated from Cicero-North Syracuse High School and came to Onondaga Community College, her plan was to stay for one semester, earn some college credits, and transfer to a four-year school. She was a first-generation college student who grew up in a single parent home and had been working since age 14 to help make ends meet.

Student Finally Becomes An Alumnus Four Decades Later

"I confer upon you your associate's degree with all of the rights, privileges, and obligations pertaining to that degree and program. Congratulations!"

And with those words from Onondaga Community College President Dr. Warren Hilton, Tom Soccocio Jr's journey to a degree came to a celebratory conclusion some 37 years after it started.
