Students, faculty, and staff from Onondaga Community College recently joined forces to help beautify a Syracuse Neighborhood during Home HeadQuarters' annual Neighborhood Block Blitz. The event brought together volunteers from across the city to provide free repairs, landscaping, and painting to local homes.
"Volunteer work - and in particular, this assignment - is a strong passion of mine," said student Gregory Anderson. "Our self-worth is tied to how we view ourselves and the world around us. Projects like this directly impact people in a positive manner."
The Block Blitz aims to refresh up to 50 properties in a single day at no cost to homeowners. Its goal includes encouraging residents to improve curb appeal, form neighborhood groups, and invest in their homes while strengthening community bonds.
As part of OCC's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Day of Community, volunteers painted porches, tackled yard work, and helped beautify a neighborhood near South Avenue.
"The Home Headquarters Block Blitz was a great opportunity for OCC students to connect with the Syracuse community, meet other students, and work together to provide a helping hand to local neighbors," said Student Success Coach Maria Malagisi.
Another OCC Day of Community is being planned for later this semester.
