In the final weeks of the spring semester, students, faculty, and staff in Onondaga Community College's School of Technology, Engineering & Computing spent an afternoon helping others. They built beds for children as part of a growing effort by Sleep in Heavenly Peace. The organization builds and delivers beds to children in need in the greater Syracuse and Oswego city areas.
The bed building process included cutting lumber, sanding, drilling, and assembly. In just under 3 hours, OCC's team made 40 beds! "This was a great way for students to use the skills they learned in the classroom to support community service," said Professor Betsy Nicholas. "Students could tangibly see how organization, fixturing, using tools, communication, and teamwork all contributed to a successful end product."
The Syracuse chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace was started in 2018. Since then, the organization has delivered nearly 6,000 beds to children in need.
