Kayla Suppa earned two college degrees before coming to OCC. She will complete her Music degree this semester, then transfer to a four-year school.

Kayla Suppa had just completed her bachelor's degree when she made a life-changing decision.

She was returning home to Oneida High School for a farewell concert for her former band director, David Hawthorne, who had served the school district for more than 30 years. "I thought, 'Oh my gosh! What did I do with my life?' I thought about going to college for music, but could never commit to it."

Instead, Suppa had earned an associate degree in Human Services, a bachelor's degree in Social Work, and was enrolled in a related master's program.

But attending the concert changed everything. "Within the next 48 hours I had applied here (to Onondaga Community College). A week later I unenrolled in my master's program, enrolled here, and auditioned here."

She started playing the oboe in 4th grade, but got away from doing so with any regularity after graduating high school. When she started taking classes at OCC in the fall 2024, she became reacquainted with her favorite instrument and immersed in the Music major. "It was exciting, and it was hard because I hadn't been involved in music in any capacity for 5 years. Right away, I knew I was where I should be. It was really challenging and stressful, but it was a good stress. I felt good about where I was heading."

One year ago, she was awarded the David & Selma Moore Music Scholarship administered by the OCC Foundation. As she mastered her coursework, she also served as a Work/Study student in Athletics, assisting with game day operations. She had played soccer and volleyball collegiately, and enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with her past. "It was a nice way to stay involved. I love sports. It was huge part of what I did."

Next month she will complete her Music degree, then transfer to a four-year school. Her dream is to become a music teacher, like her former band director who she stays in touch with. "He has told me, 'If you're feeling it, go for it.' He's asked me to send him links to my concerts. When I was at Potsdam for an audition, I texted him that I was thinking of him because he and his wife went to college there. He's been a big part of my life and really inspired me."
