Onondaga Community College's chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) is preparing for its big fundraiser, which will benefit a future OCC student. The AAWCC Scholarship Scramble, a 4-person captain and crew golf tournament, will be held Sunday, July 13 at Tanner Valley Golf Course in the town of Onondaga. The cost is $400 for a 4-person team, and all money raised will be put toward a student scholarship. There are still openings for players and sponsorship opportunities. More information is available by clicking on this link.
OCC's AAWCC chapter is celebrating its 10th year on campus. The national organization's mission is to:
- Encourage personal and professional development for women in community, junior, and technical colleges.
- Support women in leadership roles.
- Develop communications among women in community, junior, and technical colleges.
- Promote and offer workshops for women in community, junior, and technical colleges.
- Share information on courses, programs, and services of interest to the membership.
OCC chapter members live their mission by hosting networking lunches and activities on campus and within the community at local businesses. They also provide professional development opportunities for members including seminars on imposter syndrome, women working in STEM days, leadership development such as the Leaders Institute in conjunction with the national organization, going back to school information/seminars, and more.
AAWCC gives back to the campus and greater Central New York community by participating in toiletry drives for students in need, and the Christmas Bureau toy and food distribution through the Salvation Army.
OCC's chapter also offers members opportunities to come together and learn through social activities like crafts, trivia, and an event called “Ask the Mechanic.” Members coordinated the event with OCC Automotive Technology Program Chair and Professor Jon Seargent to give women the opportunity to learn more about cars in a judgement-free way. Members asked questions about how cars operate, and were given the opportunity to practice removing and installing spark plugs and tires!
If you are interested in joining OCC's AWCC chapter, you can learn more at their website. And we hope to see you on the golf course July 13!
