Two P-TECH Students Chosen for Micron Paid Internships

"It's like Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket!"

That was Will Appleton's reaction when he learned he had been selected for a paid internship at Micron this summer. Appleton is a senior at Central Square High School and a Electrical Technology major at Onondaga Community College through the Pathways in Technology Early College High School program, which is known as P-TECH. The program provides high school students the opportunity to work toward their high school diploma and associate degree simultaneously, and ultimately a pathway to an in-demand job.

"I Feel Like I Belong!"

March 23, 2016 was a typical end-of-winter, start-of-spring day in Central New York. The temperature hovered around 40 degrees. At times it was overcast with a rare appearance by the sun, and at times it rained lightly. What might have seemed extremely gloomy to locals was anything but that to Desire Ndagijimana, his 5 siblings, and their parents. When their plane touched down at the Syracuse airport around 6 p.m. that night, they were pretty sure they were in paradise. "For me it was like 'Oh my God I'm coming to the land of opportunity.

Women's Basketball Team Returning to National Tourney!

Onondaga Community College's Women's Basketball team earned its third straight trip to the NJCAA National Tournament, defeating Jefferson Community College 72-54 in Watertown in the Region III Championship game. Kate Grainger (Home Schooled, from Fayetteville) was named Region III Tournament MVP. Teammate Brianna Weaver (C-NS HS) was named to the All-Tournament team.

Student Spotlight: Elizabeth Kraynak

There is little, if any, down time in Elizabeth Kraynak's life. And she's fine with that. Her lengthy list of activities includes:

  • Lifeguard at the YMCA where she works 35 hours a week.
  • Tutor through her local library in the subjects of physics, calculus, and chemistry.
  • Serves as a Certified EMT.

And then there's everything she does at OCC which includes:

Nationally Recognized for Developing a Better Way

Three Onondaga Community College colleagues who began working on a project to accelerate developmental education a decade ago are about to have that project recognized with a national award. The OCC English Department will receive the 2024 Diana Hacker Two-Year College English Association Award for Outstanding Programs in English for Two-year Colleges because of the work done by Dean Michael O'Connor, Dr. Matt DelConte, and Dr. Malkiel Choseed.

Building Plans for the Future

There's a building boom coming to our region!

With the arrival of Micron there will be the need for more housing, more hotels, more everything. And there's the Interstate 81 project as well which is just beginning and will span several years.

With so much work ahead, the need is greater than ever for industry professionals to be collaborating. That's why the OCC Foundation organized a forum titled, "Building the Future: Construction and Architecture in the Growing CNY Landscape."

Students Celebrate the Life of Louis Stokes

Onondaga Community College's celebration of Black History Month included a day set aside to remember the person whom an opportunity program is named after.

Friday, February 23rd was reserved for a celebration of Louis Stokes, and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. L-SAMP, as it's commonly referred to, is a fellowship program funded by the National Science Foundation. Its goal is to diversify the workforce in science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM fields.
