VA Education Benefits

Steps to Exploring Benefits:

  1. Learn more about VA education benefits and compare your benefits
    • Your membership in the U.S. Armed Forces may qualify you and your dependents for one or more of the Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits.  If you are eligible for more than one VA education benefit, you must elect which benefit to receive.
  2. Apply for VA education benefits
    • After you have applied it takes approximately 30 days for the VA to process your education claim.  If you are approved for VA education benefits, the VA will then mail you a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or award letter.  Bring this letter to the VA certifying official at your school.
  3. Request your Military Transcripts
    • For Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard, request your Joint Service Transcripts
    • For Air Force, request your transcripts from The Air University
  4. Apply for Federal Financial Aid
  5. Apply for New York State Veterans Tuition Awards (VTA)
The Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020 requires educational institutions to make certain disclosures to students using federal military and/or VA educational benefits. To view and print a copy of an estimated personalized cost of attendance you can visit the SUNY Net Price Cost Calculator and select Onondaga Community College from the dropdown. Additional financial information can be found at the NCES College Navigator site

The SUNY Financial Aid Plan (FAP) will provide a more in-depth analysis and accurate picture of student cost once the student has filed their FAFSA, completed a SUNY application, and has been accepted by a campus.
