Resources and Tools
These core tools support the most common accessibility needs in higher education, including document creation, web and LMS content review, and accessible media. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to use these tools when creating or reviewing digital content.
Document Accessibility
Microsoft Accessibility Checker
Built-in tool in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook that identifies common accessibility issues and provides guidance for fixing them.
Converts documents into accessible formats such as tagged PDFs, Word files, audio, and digital Braille. Useful for course materials and accommodation support.
Web & LMS Accessibility
WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool)
Browser-based tool that provides visual feedback on accessibility issues directly on a webpage. Commonly used for reviewing websites and learning management system content.
Video & Media Accessibility
YuJa provides built-in automated captioning for instructional videos. When media is uploaded or recorded in YuJa, users can request auto-captions from the media settings. Captions should be reviewed and edited for accuracy before videos are shared with students.
YouTube provides automatic captioning for uploaded videos through YouTube Studio. Captions must be reviewed and edited for accuracy before sharing with students. Videos intended for classroom use may be set to Unlisted so they are accessible by link but not publicly searchable.
Accessibility Standards & Guidance
SUNY Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) Best Practices
System-level guidance supporting accessible documents, web content, and instructional materials across SUNY institutions.
