Onondaga Community College has several new academic programs which students can enroll in for the fall 2023 semester.

The list includes two new programs which could lead to a position at Micron or other employers.

Electromechanical Technology A.A.S. (Associate in Applied Science)

  • This is a two-year degree program focused on the troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical systems. Students gain a fundamental understanding of technology used in advanced manufacturing and apply that knowledge to address faults and processing problems. Students learn how electrical signals are used to communicate and control automated devices in the manufacturing environment, how to interact and program common industrial systems, and how to apply mechanical and hydraulic systems to provide motion and function. Students learn problem solving techniques for breaking down complex problems and analyzing them to effectively identify appropriate solutions.
  • Instructional areas include Industrial Automation, Robotics, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems, Mechanisms, Industrial Electricity, Programming, and Motors, Controllers, and Motion.
  • Other skills learned include: Safety, Blueprint Reading, Hand Tools, Precision Measurement Tools, Statistical Process Control, and Programmable Logic Controller Programming.

Electromechanical Technology certificate program

  • This is a one-year certificate program which touches on the foundational skills and knowledge in the two-year degree program and prepares students for entry-level work. Credits earned can be put toward the two-year Electromechanical Technology A.A.S. degree.

Also coming this fall:

Supply Chain Management

  • Direct-to-career program that prepares students for careers in distribution and warehouse management. As the region grows due in large part to Micron and related businesses, there will be an increasing need for a workforce ready to navigate the complexity of the supply chain.

Architectural Design Studies

  • Students learn to utilize industry-standard software and develop creative solutions for problems. Focus of study includes construction management, design principles, and sustainable construction practices.

Construction Management

  • Learn how to lead construction projects. Construction managers will play a critical role in the region’s future as we see a resurgence of industrial development, including construction of the Micron facilities and adjacent projects.

We also have two new microcredentials which we will begin offering in the Fall 2023 semester. A microcredential can be completed in months rather than years, and is directly related to an in-demand career in our region. All credits earned through the microcredential can be applied to at least one degree at OCC such as Creative Writing or Liberal Arts: Humanities and Social Sciences should a student want to continue their education:

Digital Writing (9 credits)

  • Developed in partnership with a local marketing firm to help individuals develop the skills necessary to produce quality marketing content and learn about writing in the digital environment.

Creative and Professional Writing (9 credits)

  • Designed for individuals interested in honing their writing skills for the workplace and can help students in a variety of careers. Students will develop skills in workplace communication, creative content writing, professional and technical writing, and how to write for different audiences.

Also, two of our highly successful existing programs will be going fully online in Fall 2023:

Health Information Technology

  • Learn how to use current information systems to collect, analyze, disseminate, and maintain patient data. Rewarding career for someone who wants to be in a health-related field but not have direct patient care.

Creative Writing

  • This flexible degree is geared towards someone pursuing a writing-heavy career such as public relations specialist, copywriter, author, or even a teacher. Transfers seamlessly to SUNY Oswego, SUNY Potsdam, and Le Moyne College.

Prospective students can learn more about all of these exciting career options when Onondaga Community College hosts its Spring Open House & Accepted Students Day Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
