Baldwinsville High School Students Explore Resources and Opportunities on the OCC Campus

Approximately 200 Baldwinsville High School students had the opportunity to learn more about life on campus during a recent visit to Onondaga Community College. The event was part of a growing initiative to connect college-bound high schoolers with the wide range of opportunities available to them at OCC.

The visit was coordinated through OCC's Concurrent Enrollment program, which allows high school students to take college-level classes at their home high schools while earning transferable college credits.

Fall 2025 Alumni Faces Honoree Heather Silvia '90

Thursday, October 16 at 5:30pm, Onondaga Community College will honor a new class of Alumni Faces inductees. The ceremony will be held in the Frederick Marvin and Ernst Schuh Recital Hall in the Academic II building. In the weeks leading up to the ceremony, we are highlighting one of our new Alumni Faces honorees every Wednesday.

Student Spotlight: Jake Blackwelder

A tattoo on Jake Blackwelder's left forearm serves as a daily reminder of a fellow Marine who made a lasting impact on him. It reads: "Corporal Kevin Cueto USMC KIA June 2010 Afghanistan." Corporal Cueto was just 23 years old when he lost his life, killed by a roadside bomb which detonated while he was on foot patrol in Afghanistan near the Pakistani border. "He was my first team leader," recalled Blackwelder.

Camilla Szelazek's SUNY Reconnect Story

When Camilla Szelazek's sister told her about SUNY Reconnect, a tuition-free community college program that would be starting this fall, it sounded like the perfect opportunity. She enrolled, and is thriving in her first semester in Onondaga Community College's Nursing program. "It feels really good. I love school and I love learning. Without this opportunity, I wouldn't have been able to go back to school."

Celebrating Completion of the Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab

Onondaga Community College celebrated the completion of its Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab during a ceremony held on campus October 1. Remarks were delivered outside, and a ceremonial "wire cutting" was held inside.

The Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab was constructed in the Whitney Applied Technology Center, along with new training centers for Welding, CNC Machining, and Diesel/Heavy Equipment Repair. The renovated space in the south wing of Whitney also includes a Machine Tools lab, and an Automotive Technology lab.

Summer Internships at Micron: Paid Roles with Pathways to Employment

Micron Technology is looking for its next group of summer interns!

Mike Guttman, Micron's Program Manager for Workforce Strategies, hosted an information session for students on September 29 in Onondaga Community College's Gordon Student Center Great Room. He spent an hour discussing Micron's role in the semiconductor industry, the important part interns play in its future, and answered student questions.

Eight current OCC students interned at Micron in the summer of 2025 - seven in Manassas, Virginia, and one in Boise, Idaho.

Student Spotlight: Ghena Al-Taleb

When Ghena Al-Taleb walks into her Electromechanical Technology classes, she brings more than textbooks. She carries a story that began in her war-torn home country of Syria, continued through a decade of uncertainty in Lebanon, and found hope in Central New York.

Now 24 years old, Al-Taleb arrived with big dreams and the quiet determination to achieve them. "A lot of people on the outside said I couldn't go to college if I didn't speak the language well, but I never stopped studying English."

Criminal Justice Club Hosts 911 Center Leaders

Students in Onondaga Community College's Criminal Justice Club kicked off the academic year by welcoming two distinguished guests: Julie Corn, Commissioner of the Department of Communications/911 for Onondaga County, and 911 Center Deputy Commissioner Esteban Gonzalez. The two leaders shared their career journeys, offered professional insights, and answered student questions.
