Onondaga Community College recently recognized eight outstanding students, presenting each with a Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle program honors students who have shown excellence in one or more of the following fields: leadership, civic engagement, and scholarly research. Students selected demonstrate not only an exemplary academic performance, but a strong connection with the campus or community. The 2021 Pinnacle Award winners and the disciplines they represent on campus are:

Electrical Technology - Nico Rey

OCC was always where Lily Simmons was going to begin her college education. Even though she was the 12th ranked student in Skaneateles High School's class of 2019 and could have had her choice of four-year schools, OCC was the only school she applied to. She'd watched her older brother J.K. go from Skaneateles to OCC to SUNY Cortland and decided it would be her path as well. "I knew this would be a good starting point for me too because my credits would transfer easily and OCC has a good Early Childhood program."

Chalea Jones can't wait for Saturday, May 15 to arrive. That's the day when she'll receive her Accounting degree from Onondaga Community College. It took her 16 years to get from her high school graduation to her college commencement. She's ready to savor the moment and set an example for her children. "I have two girls and I want them to see me walk the stage and know they can do this too."

Shawn Wayson is one of those people every organization needs. She knows how to get things done. If you need to find a needle in a haystack, she can do it. If you drop a mess in her lap, she can fix it. If a younger, less experienced colleague needs advice about a better way to do things, she can share her wisdom. And she does it all under the constant and intense deadline pressures which go hand-in-hand with the television news business.
