Thanking Veterans For Their Service

This is always a strange time of the year for Kara Coakley and Kayden Perry. On November 10 they celebrate the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. It's the branch of the service they both served in. Their service brought them together and in 2016 they married. The Marine Corps birthday is always followed by Veterans Day. November 11 is the anniversary of the end of World War I and a day to remember United States veterans and victims of all wars. "We celebrate one day and we're crying the next," said Perry.

During his visit he observed members of the campus community taking part in COVID-19 saliva pool testing, met with members of Executive Council, visited Mechanical Technology and Automotive Technology labs, and had a conversation with Student Officers about how the fall semester has gone for them.

Student Spotlight: Zainab Alsamerraire

The kindness of Americans that Zainab Alsamerraire and her family experienced when they immigrated to the United States changed her academic and career focus. She had studied accounting in Iraq and planned to continue doing so here. She changed her mind after arriving in the United States three years ago with her three children, husband, and mother-in-law. "I decided I wanted to study Human services. I want to help people the way they helped us when we arrived here. Without those people we couldn't have done anything."

The skills students learn will put them on the path to a rewarding career in marketing, public relations, or even computer and video game programming.

The Brains Behind Bob

Everybody knows Bob. He's the stick figure character on signs posted across the Onondaga Community College campus, reminding you to wear your mask. "This is Bob. Bob wears his mask at all times on OCC's campus. Be like Bob." It's a serious message delivered simply and memorably. It's author is Rashel Chahine, a member of OCC's Student Government. The idea for it came from a meeting she had with Zach Snyder, OCC's Digital Marketing Specialist who oversees the College's social media channels.
