Onondaga Community College's Fire Protection Technology degree program is getting a makeover. New Program Coordinator Kevin Geidel has brought his diverse background to campus and is working hard to introduce students to all of the related career options besides firefighting. Geidel has spent 20 years in the fire service and 15 years as an engineer.

OCC Professor And Wife Take Part In COVID-19 Vaccine Trial

If the COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Pfizer biopharmaceutical company becomes one of the solutions to the pandemic, an Onondaga Community College professor and her wife will have played a critical a role in its development. Sociology Professor Dr. Annie Tuttle and her wife Melissa took part in the COVID-19 vaccine trial which was administered by SUNY Upstate Medical University's Clinical Research Unit. "We discussed the risks and decided it was important to do our part during this time and help save lives.

Employee Profile: Jackie Barstow

Jackie Barstow loves her job. As Coordinator of OCC's chapter of international honor society Phi Theta Kappa and Coordinator of the Lillian Slutzker Honors College, she helps guide high-achieving students through their time on campus and plan their futures. "Most places where I've worked have a lot of layers between administrators and students. There are none of those layers here. If a student wants to see me I tell them to come and knock on my door. They email me directly. It's really fun and satisfying. I enjoy it."

Thanking Veterans For Their Service

This is always a strange time of the year for Kara Coakley and Kayden Perry. On November 10 they celebrate the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. It's the branch of the service they both served in. Their service brought them together and in 2016 they married. The Marine Corps birthday is always followed by Veterans Day. November 11 is the anniversary of the end of World War I and a day to remember United States veterans and victims of all wars. "We celebrate one day and we're crying the next," said Perry.

New SUNY Chancellor Visits Campus

New SUNY Chancellor Dr. Jim Malatras made his first visit to the Onondaga Community College campus November 9. During his visit he observed members of the campus community taking part in COVID-19 saliva pool testing, met with members of Executive Council, visited Mechanical Technology and Automotive Technology labs, and had a conversation with Student Officers about how the fall semester has gone for them.

Student Spotlight: Zainab Alsamerraire

The kindness of Americans that Zainab Alsamerraire and her family experienced when they immigrated to the United States changed her academic and career focus. She had studied accounting in Iraq and planned to continue doing so here. She changed her mind after arriving in the United States three years ago with her three children, husband, and mother-in-law. "I decided I wanted to study Human services. I want to help people the way they helped us when we arrived here. Without those people we couldn't have done anything."

Honor Society Welcomes Fall 2020 Class

Onondaga Community College's chapter of international honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) welcomed 134 new students during its fall semester induction ceremony Monday night. Due to COVID-19 the event was virtual.

PTK member Eleanor Petrucco served as the event emcee. Musical performances during the ceremony included student Nova Kowalski singing the National Anthem, and Hadassah Johnson singing the PTK song.
