Ivo Perez Torres began dreaming about leaving Cuba for the United States when he learned English at age 17. "I was attracted to the opportunities and the freedom here, not just the political freedom but the freedom to choose my path, to do what I want the way I want."
Women’s Hoops Team Heading to National Championships
The Onondaga Community College Women’s Basketball team is heading to the national championships! The Lazers defeated North Country Community College 57-45 in the championship game of the Region 3 tournament Sunday night at Allyn Hall Gym on the OCC campus.
The Lazers Hannah Durand (Marcellus High School) was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Teammate Avianna Baker (Onondaga High School) was named to the All-Tournament team.
The win gives the Lazers an automatic berth in the national tournament March 9-12 in Rochester, Minnesota.
Celebrating Our Unity
Onondaga Community College celebrated the diversity of its campus community during the spring semester Unity Day. Festivities were held February 23 across campus. The theme of the event was "One Love, One Heart" and paid tribute to retiring OCC President Dr. Casey Crabill and singer, songwriter, and musician Bob Marley.
P-TECH Profile: Maxwell Hill
The P-TECH program came along at the perfect time for Maxwell Hill. "It was only in its second year when I learned about it in a meeting at my middle school. I was sold on it right away."
P-TECH stands for Pathways in Technology Early College High School. It's a program that provides high school students the opportunity to work toward their high school diploma and associate degree simultaneously, and ultimately a pathway to an in-demand job.

Student Spotlight: Cheyenne Sinchico
Cheyenne Sinchico came to the United States from Ecuador with the dream of one day earning her college degree and making a difference in the lives of others. She's on her way to doing that at Onondaga Community College. "I'm grateful for all of the support I've received at OCC because without it I wouldn't be here."
Sinchico was born in New York City, left the country at a young age with her family, and returned to the U.S. in 2014 along with her two sisters and brother. She worked hard to learn the English language and graduated from PSLA at Fowler High School in 2020.
Women's Hoops Team Heading Into Post-Season On A Roll
Kelly Grinnell-Seibt entered her first season as Head Coach of the Onondaga Community College Women's Basketball team with a group of players who had never played together. The new coach and top-to-bottom new roster won their first two games, lost their next two games, and haven't lost since. They enter the post-season with a 19 game winning streak and a top 5 national ranking.
Professor Works on Grammy-Nominated Project
Professor Shane Patterson’s childhood fascination with old music equipment led him to a dream career and a role in a Grammy-nominated album. “My parents were in a band before I was around. Growing up I would tinker with their old sound gear. I did a lot of learning by plugging things into other things and seeing what happened.”
