Girls Going Tech Espanol Comes To OCC

Onondaga Community College and La Liga welcomed more than 50 8th grade girls from the Syracuse City School District to campus October 18 for Girls Going Tech Espanol. Students participated in hands-on STEM-related activities, and engaged in "Women in STEM" group mentoring conversations, all entirely in Spanish. "This inspired me a lot because I have options for high school, and one of them might be engineering" said Lillian Estrada.

Student Spotlight: Barbara and Tanisha Wiggins

Barbara and Tanisha Wiggins are about to reach the finish line together. This semester the mother and daughter duo will complete their Human Services degrees and walk the stage together at Onondaga Community College's December graduation ceremony. "I'll probably start crying," said Barbara Wiggins. "I think I'll feel like crying too," said Tanisha Wiggins. "I've been waiting for this for so many years. It's going to be a remarkable experience."

Women's Soccer Getting Ready For Post-Season Play

Onondaga Community College's Women's Soccer team entered the year with just two returning players. Despite that the Lazers have put together an outstanding regular season, winning 10 games and losing only 2.

Coach Sean St. Denis has three captains on this year's team; sophomore Alex Ruzekowicz (West Genesee HS, Architectural Technology major), sophomore Lynnae Russell (Moravia HS, Humanities & Social Sciences major), and freshman Brenna Mast (Beaver River HS, Health Sciences major).

Continuing To Educate The Workforce

Technology changes fast. If you work in a highly technical field, the need for education is continuous. That's why six employees of JMA Wireless came to the Onondaga Community College campus earlier this semester. They participated in a FANUC Handling Tool Operations and Programming class to learn how to use robots to make their jobs more efficient.

Helping Students With Mental Health

There used to be a stigma attached to the need for mental health services. Erika Sheets, who is the Director of Onondaga Community College's Counseling Center & Community Care Hub, has seen that stigma all but vanish in her five years here. "There was a time when we would see students in the hall we knew and we wouldn't say anything to them for confidentiality reasons unless they said hello to us first. Recently I had a student shout out my name, call me over, and tell their friend 'this is my counselor. You need to set up an appointment with her. She's awesome.'"

Student Spotlight: Amya Graves

Amya Graves is so passionate about wanting to work in Tokyo one day as an illustrator she taught herself Japanese. "I bought books and watched videos on YouTube. It took me about 5 years." Her inspiration is Hayao Miyazaki, a Japanese animator, filmmaker, and artist who is considered to be one of the most accomplished filmmakers in the history of animation.

New Technology Helps Students Experience Their Futures

McKenzie Anderson had used Virtual Reality (VR) Headsets while playing video games, but it was a whole new experience when they became part of her coursework in her Intro to Health Professions class (HPR 101) this semester. "It was really cool! I knew it wasn't exactly what it was like in real life, but I was able to experience what the setting would be like and what I would be doing."
